Philip Stockburn is responsible for establishing Unicorn Investment Bank’s risk management function covering all aspects of credit, market, liquidity and operational risks.
Mr. Stockburn has 28 years of experience in finance and risk management in the UK and the Middle East, mainly in the banking sector. He began his career with the Delta Metal Company in London as a trainee management accountant. Later, he joined Hill Samuel & Co. Ltd, a City of London merchant banking “accepting house”, as the management accounting manager. He then joined the ANZ Banking Group’s merchant banking division as Group MIS manager, progressing to the Head of Finance role three years later. He moved on to the UK headquarters of the ANZ Group Finance Division to be Group Accounting Manager for the South East Asia, Middle East and Africa Banking Division. Mr. Stockburn then joined the Co-operative Bank plc as Financial Controller of the London Treasury and Asset & Liability Management Divisions. He re-engineered the MIS process of the operation and managed the implementation of a treasury derivative product accounting system.
After 16 years with London banks, Mr. Stockburn moved to the Middle East to become Financial Controller of the Commercial Bank of Kuwait, in Kuwait City. He worked closely with the CEO to improve the financial strength of the Bank, managing several bank credit ratings, resulting in the improved international standing of the Bank. He spearheaded the initial developments of risk management techniques and policies, establishing the Bank’s first risk management policy manual submitted to, and approved by the Board. Subsequently, Mr. Stockburn moved to Riyad Bank in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to be the Bank’s first appointed Vice President of Financial Risk Management. He initiated and developed risk management disciplines for the Bank’s Treasury, Investments, Mutual Funds, Brokerage and Asset & Liability Management businesses. He designed and drafted the principal financial risk governance policies, was a key driver for integration of the Bank’s wholesale banking systems and introduced Value at Risk techniques, an industry standard risk measure, to the Bank’s trading businesses.
Philip Stockburn is a graduate with a BA honors degree in Business Studies from Greenwich University, London, and is an associate member of the UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
